COVID-19 cases in England and Wales spike as R rate climbs above 1

Separate studies released on Friday show that the R value – the rate at which an infected person passes on COVID-19 – has risen above 1 for the first time since March. The Department of Health and Social Care puts the current R rate at between 1.0 and 1.2, while a study by Imperial College says the figure could be as high as 1.7, with cases doubling every seven to eight days.
