May will still be on duty during US President Donald Trump’s visit (3-5 June). May announced that she would continue to serve until a successor is elected.
The position of the conservative party leader had long been shaken. May was under pressure from Brexit defenders and with EU-friendly lawmakers in her own conservative party.
There are a number of potential successors, with former Foreign Minister Boris Johnson mentioned the most among political circles. In addition, former Brexit Minister Dominic Raab, former Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt, Interior Minister Sajid Javid, Andrea Leadsom and Defense Minister Penny Mordaunt are also potential successors.
