UN Special Rapporteur Professor Alston stated that poverty is ‘tragic’ and systematic, according to BBC news.
Professor Alston also held that social safety net in England and the rest of the UK ‘deliberately removed and replaced with a harsh and uncaring ethos”, in a statement that appeared in the UN report.
Alston also criticized the cuts to public services, commenting that they have had ‘tragic consequences’, and that the motivations for the cuts were ‘ideological’.
In the report, Professor Alston argued that “the bottom line is that much of the glue that has held British society together since the Second World War has been deliberately removed and replaced with a harsh and uncaring ethos.”
The government however criticized the report, calling it ‘barely believable’.
Professor Alston, a specialist in human rights law, was appointed to his position by the Human Rights Council of the United Nations.
