Germany criticised Turkey over torture of journalist Deniz Yucel

The journalist Deniz Yücel has recently said that he was tortured during detention in Turkey.

As a result, Germany’s Foreign Ministry urged Turkey to adhere to the United Nations’ Convention against Torture.

A German foreign ministry spokesman told the German news agency DPA, “We condemn all kinds of torture and ill-treatment. Such treatment is illegal.’

Turkey had adopted the United Nations’ Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment Convention on January 25, 1988. The contract was adopted by law no. 3441 and it came into effect after the law was announced in the official gazette. However, the government of Turkey did not agree with the authorisation of the International Court of Justice in the event of a dispute between two states.
