At least 290 people were killed and 500 people were wounded.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that security forces should inquire why they ignored intelligence reports. Ranil Wickremesinghe said neither he nor any of his ministers knew of such intelligence, stressing that his priority is to capture those responsible for the attacks.

According to the BBC, Sri Lanka Telecommunications Minister Harin Fernando said that he had warned that an unnamed group could organize attacks 10 days ago, but President Maithripala Sirisena did not share this information with the government.
