Gültan Kışanak, former mayor of Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality, and Sebahat Tuncel, DBP Co-Chairperson have been sentenced to 14 years 3 months, and 15 years in prison, respectively. Gülten Kışanak was given the prison sentence for “membership in a terrorist organization” and “spreading terrorist propaganda’.
The trial took place at the 5th Malatya High Criminal Court.
Gültan Kışanak defended her case before the court for the last time. Sebahat Tuncel, who is held in Kandıra Prison, could not attend the trial due to health problems.
After Kışanak’s defense, the court received the last defense of the lawyers. After a break, the court declared the decision.
Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office had sent Kışanak and Tuncel’s file to the General Directorate of Criminal Affairs of the Ministry of Justice requesting transfer of the file on grounds of security, and the Supreme Court of Appeals’ 5th Penal Court had transferred the file to the Malatya Criminal Court after evaluating the request. The court sentenced former mayor of Diyarbakır Gültan Kışanak to 10 years and 15 months in prison for ‘membership in a terrorist organization’ and 1 year and 24 months for ‘doing propaganda for an armed terrorist organization. DBP Co-Chairperson Sebahat Tuncel was sentenced to 9 years and 9 months for being a member of a terrorist organization and 4 years and 15 months for ‘doing propaganda for an armed terrorist organization’
