Voice of Civilization V, William Morgan Sheppard, dies at 86

William Morgan Sheppard, the narrator of Civilization V, the fifth installment in the Civilization series, has passed away at the age of 86.

Sheppard was a British actor who had a long successful career with appearances in Star Trek and Doctor Who.

However, Sheppard is best known for his voice acting, particularly for iconic games such as Medal of Honor and Civilization.

Sheppard voiced the narrator of Civilization V, in which players compete with AI controlled countries of the world for world domination. The game included almost all major nations of the world, with each famous ruler of the nation included with CGI animation speaking in his or her native tongue.

In the game, when the player discovered a new technology or invention, Sheppard voiced a relevant maxim or a quote. Some of the memorable lines Sheppard narrated included, ‘Shall the clay that fashioneth it, what makest thou?’ (quote from the Bible, when the player discovered pottery) and ‘Vision is the art of seeing things invisible’ (Jonathan Swift, when the player discovered radar).
