Former party leader sentenced to 4 years and 8 months in Turkey

Sirri Sureyya Onder and Demirtas’ sentences have been approved by the Istanbul Regional Court of Justice for ‘doing an armed terrorist group’s propaganda’.

Selahattin Demirtas, former HDP leader and former HPD member of parliament has been sentenced to 4 years and 8 months.

On the other hand, Sirri Sureyya Onder received 3 years and 6 months of prison sentence. Despite the decision of the European Court of Human Rights to release Demirtas, this will not have any effect as Demirtas now has an approved prison sentence.

Demirtaş’s lawyer protested the decision on his social media account.

Both Demirtas and Onder were put on trial at the Istanbul 25th criminal court for their statements made during the Kurdish solution process.

Demirtas has received a terrorism related sentence for the first time. There has been no comments from HDP representatives.

During his talk at the Parliament, President Erdogan stated, ‘We are not bound by the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights. We make our counter move, and finish this business. Terrorism does not stop.’
